Nastasia Urbano, now 57, is a former model and was on the cover of Vogue, earning millions of dollars a year at the height of her career. Now, she lives on the streets of Barcelona, Spain, according to the British website Daily Mail.
“I did all the magazines, I was loved by everyone. I got paid a million dollars a year for just 20 days of work, for three or four years. I had dinner one day with Jack Nicholson, the next day with Andy Warhol or even Roman Polanski. I was at parties with Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson and Simon and Garfunkel and I was about to go to Madonna and Sean Penn’s wedding because actor David Keith was invited and I was dating him at the time, but that day we woke up with a hangover and we couldn’t get up. I had everything, I was living like a queen,” said the former model.
Nastasia Urbano’s life changed after she met the man who later became her husband and the father of her children. According to the former top model, he left her with nothing but her clothes. “The only good thing about this relationship was my kids, the rest was horrible,” she said.
“He paid for everything with my money. Just two days after I met him, he wanted me to buy a BMW and I, like an idiot, wrote a check. I was in love”, recalls the former Vogue cover, who now suffers from depression and says she was evicted from several houses because she couldn’t pay the rent.
Nastasia now sleeps on some friends’ sofas and outside bank doors in Barcelona. “I want to live, not just survive. I’m tired of surviving and asking for money. People around me are gone, everyone is gone and I’m not surprised,” she said. “I want my children to see me well. I want to recover as a person and be well, so they can be proud of me.”
After learning about Nastasia’s situation, some friends decided to help her. Ruth Schuler, also a former model, said she was shocked by her former colleague’s situation. “I’m in shock. No one expected this. We were princess level, but she was goddess level,” she said. “I remember her as an introverted person, very beautiful and very generous with others. We are bringing more people together. The first thing is to talk to her, to find out what she is like and what she needs.”
As for former model Hernando Herrera, he said that the former colleague has many things to give to the world of fashion. “She could do a lot of things, not just modeling, but also conferences, fashion speeches and other activities. I’m ready to teach her and talk to photographers and agencies so she can work again.”
